If you would like to find out more about the health hazards of sitting, check out the great article published in the Washington Post.  Click here to read more.

As osteopaths we treat a number of musculoskeletal complaints that can be either causes, aggravated or maintained by prolonged or poor sitting postures.  Some of these include neck pain, back pain, leg pain, shoulder pain, elbow and forearm/wrist pain.  Many times these clients present to the clinic reporting to be suffering from strains and sprains and often aren’t aware of how sitting for long periods of time in poor postures can create such problems.  One of the simplest and best ways to demonstrate is to often have the client sit and either lift their arm above their head or rotate their head or trunk.  I will then often get them to adopt a more neutral upright sitting posture and get them to do the same thing.  Wow is what many clients will often say.  Not realising how poor sitting postures can reduce ones active range of movement.  This type of test and retest is often even more powerful when they find that their aches and pains either resolve or are reduced in intensity when they perform the same aggravating movement with better sitting posture.  This is why I bang on constantly to my clients about improving their siting posture and limiting the time they spend sitting per day.

If you are currently suffering from neck pain, back pain or upper limb pain and you think your sitting posture might be contributing, be sure to book in and see one of our osteopaths at Principle Four Osteopathy to find out more about what you can do to prevent these aches and pains.
