Goodmorning Exercise With Varying Foot Stances – An Osteopaths Perspectives

In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy performing a goodmorning exercise (a hip hinge barbell loaded exercise that trains the posterior chain i.e. lower back, gluteals and hamstring).  He performs 4 sets of 10 reps with a submaximal load due to the varying foot stances adopted (narrow and wide) in the exercise.  Often we will train movements like the squat, lunge, step up and deadlift patterns with the same fixed foot patterns. Whilst this might be a good strategy for maximal loads, I will often vary the stances of these movements with sub maximal so that the body is forced to adapt and build strength across a wider range of function.
