Football Bar Floor Press – Training The Chest

The football bar is a great training accessory to use when training both the chest, shoulders and back because it allows the user to alter their hand grip position as well as width during bench pressing, overhead shoulder pressing and bent over rows.  This variation in hand positions is great for those with shoulder issues that are aggravated by an externally rotated arm position.  Typically those people with some form of subacromial impingement or perhaps previous history of shoulder subluxation/dislocation may benefit from trying the football bar.

In the image below you will see Elite Sports Performance attendee Dave Petronio demonstrating a football bar floor press.  The floor press is another great way to alter ones pressing focus by eliminating ones ability to drive through the feet and hips as one would typically in a bench press.  The floor press also reduces the range of motion that one can perform and can be used to allow one to load up heavier to get accustomed to the load in the mid to top range of the horizontal press movement.  It is also a great exercise for those who have issues in the shoulder that may be aggravated in the bottom range of the horizontal press.
