Dry Needling

Report:  Abbas Din Osteopath

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is an effective form of treatment for acute or chronic pain with very few side effects. The technique involves inserting a very fine acupuncture needle into a trigger point into a muscle belly to release muscle tension and discomfort. A’ trigger point’ is a tender spot in a tight band of muscle which causes pain and tightness in the body. When a small needle is inserted into these trigger points, the nervous system sends a message to the tight muscle to inhibit and reduce the muscle spasms, thus helping in decreasing and stopping pain and tension experienced by the patient.

What is the difference between Dry needling and other needles?

The term dry needling is different from a wet needle as it is used to distinguish between a ‘non-injection’ needle from ‘injection needling’ which uses a hypodermic syringe that involves injecting a substance such as aesthetic or antibiotics into the tissue. In contrast to this, dry needling or “non-injection needling”, uses a solid needle that is made from a metal filament that is used to stimulate specific reactions of muscle tissue to get a relaxation effect.

Is dry needling painful?

The dry needles used at Principle Four Osteopathy are all single use sterile needles that are extremely fine with most patients unable to even feel it penetrate the skin once inserted in.

What conditions can be treated with dry needling?

Dry Needling at Principle Four Osteopathy can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems. Conditions that may be treated with dry needling include back pain, tight neck muscles, shoulder pain, tennis and golfers elbow, leg pain, hamstring tightness and calf spams as well as tension type headaches and migraines.

What side effects can be occur with dry needling?
If performed correctly by a qualified practitioner, there are minimal side effects to dry needling. Mild discomfort from the needles being inserted in as well as a slight achiness over the area treated may be experienced. Typically, this type of soreness experienced may last between few hours to two days and can be seen as a positive sign that the muscles are responding and relaxing to the dry needling treatment.
