Deficit Kettlebell Deadlift Exercise

The kettlebell deadlift is one of my go to exercises for teaching clients to perform a deadlift for a number of reasons.  These reasons are outlined below:

  • Load is placed between the legs and close to ones centre of gravity.  Unlike a bar, ones hands are closer to them and reduces the likelihood one one hands moving away from the body with load.
  • One can easily perform a conventional stance or sumo stance position with the kettlebell
  • The handle on the kettlebell is easy to hold and grip.
  • The kettlebell position can be adjusted accordingly and one can reduce the range of motion of the kettlebell deadlift by raising it off the ground under some mats or a box.  One can also choose to perform a greater range of motion deadlift by standing on mats or weight plates.
  • One can perform a variety of deadlift patterns – unilateral (suitcase deadlift), bilateral with kettelbell placed either side of ones legs or bilateral single kettlebell hold (between the legs).
  • One can easily vary their foot position and stance to build strength through the body across multiple positions.
