Deadlift – Sumo Deadlift Technique Tweak

Recently we had a client attend the clinic who has been making great progress in their squat, but has been having issues with feeling comfortable and strong with their deadlift. It must also be said that this client has had previous back injuries and is now back lifting regularly and is wanting to build strength and conditioning again.

Whilst there are many reasons why one might not feel comfortable or strong  i.e.  technique, training program etc etc, I decided to take a look at his deadlift stance and review the movement pattern.  The image on the left was his initial starting deadlift stance and the image on the right was the end result of changing a few things.  Whilst there is no one way to perform a sumo deadlift and often ones set up will be dictated by their shape, size and comfort, I have tried to improve his position relative to the bar by having him sit down and back further into the start position so that we could bring the shoulders over the bar.

I will hopefully be able to update this clients progress over the next 8-12 weeks as he puts some of these tips into practice.
