Conventional and Sumo Deadlift Exercise Prescription

At Principle Four Osteopathy we are regularly prescription the deadlift and the many variations on this (barbell, kettlebell, elevated deadlift i.e. rackpull or off blocks), trap bar, romanian deadlift and single leg and unilateral versions  These are often prescribed as movement patterns (unloaded) early on in ones program and then we look to gradually start with modified range of motion before progressing to off the floor or into unilateral or single leg versions.  The conventional deadlift differs to that off the sumo stance in that ones foot stance is narrower and the hands will traditionally grip on the outside of the legs.  The sumo stance usually involves a wider stance and gripping of the bar inside the legs with a more vertical trunk position.  Depending on what we are trying to achieve i.e more hamstring loading i.e. fixed knee position or glute/ham involvement, more upright trunk position or needing to control rotation through the torso (single arm versions) or balance and control (single leg versions), we may prescribe one or a number of these.
