Considerations Of Neck Position In The Deadlift

Is there such a thing as a bad position for the neck in the deadlift?  I guess it all comes down to what one is trying to achieve.  As an osteopath who works with clients who are generally either in pain or trying to stay out of pain, I will look to adjust positions in a particular movement or exercise to reduce the likelihood of a complaint occurring i.e. in the image below you will see an extended neck position and a packed (neutral spine) neck position.  For the general public I will always opt for more conservative postures as they are generally not aiming for world records or training in the realms of the 1-3 rep range.  For the competitive lifter, you could argue that you should do whatever allows that person to lift the heaviest weight possible.  However at what expense?  Are we training people for short term results (weeks/months) or are we training people for a lifetime of results?  Just some food for thought from myself as I wait for my next client to turn up.
