The Common Lunge Matrix

The lunge is a great exercise that can be varied in so many different ways and therefore it is both a great warm up exercise for the lower body, but also a great strength exercise.   Gary Gray of the Gray Institute has been a big influence on my practice as an osteopath as he has highlighted the need to move and train the body across all planes of motion (tri plane, multiplane) as this is how we live in our daily lives.  Far too often we will see an approach to training in the vertical and sagittal planes and this is often reflected in the design of both fitness equipment and how people often train in fitness gyms and studios.  In the image below you will see one of Principle Four Osteopathy clients performing a multi directional lunge (anterior, anterior lateral, lateral and posterior lateral lunge).  These movement examples are only a few of the many variations that one can adopt when looking to add lunges into their training program and these are probably reflective of the most common lunge variations that we perform in life.  Next time you looking to vary up your leg training program, make sure you incorporate multidirectional movements into your training program.
