The best warm up exercises for training the upper body are those that take the upper limb through all ranges of motion and incorporate the movement patterns that you will be training. In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams demonstrating the following exercises:

  • Shoulder abduction (full range)
  • Shoulder flexion (full range)
  • Horizontal flexion/extension
  • Straight arm pull
  • Vertical pull
  • Horizontal pull
  • Face pull

Keep the loads light and perform 2-3 sets 10-15 repetitions to prepare the upper limb for training.

Note: We have not incorporated any pushing movements i.e. horizontal and vertical pushing in this video series that would also be included when training the upper body.
