Barriers To Change

At Principle Four Osteopathy we see many clients who are looking to change something in their life, often relating to pain or health and wellbeing.  Often clients are very good at identifying what it is they want to change, but there is a lack of thought around some of the barriers to change.  Some people who are looking to change often go onto to successfully change their life for the better whilst others either hit a stumbling block and cannot progress or find themselves consistently repeating the same mistakes and are going around and around in circle.

When I talk to my clients around change I will often ask them the question, are there any potential barriers to changing?  This then gets them into the mindset where we they can then identify with what some of these might be so that we can work on creating change in a way that they will be able to.  For those who are not sure of some of the many barriers to change, some of the most common ones are listed below:

  • Lack of time
  • Lack of motivation
  • Lack of energy
  • Competing priorities
  • Lack of confidence
  • Lack of resources
  • Lack of knowledge/education
  • Lack of finances
  • Fear of change
  • Negative thoughts associated with change
  • Lack of commitment
  • Inability to break bad habits

Now this list is not meant to be exhaustive, but are some of the more common ones that people identify with.  In order to change, part of the process requires us to identify some of these barriers and look to problem solve or create a strategy that allows us to change without these barriers stopping us.  Sometimes we might even need to think about what it is that we want to change and then look to create a vision statement and smart goal focusing on something that has us moving towards what it is that we want to change in order to create a successful outcome.  Creating change is not done over night (well it certainly isn’t for me anyway), so we need to think about how we can create change over time and get us moving towards what it is or how we want to be living in the future.
