Balancing Out Your Training Program

Often we will get clients presenting to the clinic for the treatment of injuries that are either caused, aggravated or maintained by their training program.  As a result we will always ask our clients to provide us with detail around their training program and when we review this with them, there is often an imbalance in their program to some degree.  This is especially apparent with regards to push/pull exercises and work completed or anterior to posterior lower body work.  A wise strength and conditioning coach (Marty Girvan of ESP spotswood) once said that we should always consider a 2:1 ratio (pull to push or posterior to anterior lower body exercises) and we must always consider all movement patterns.  Since adopting this basic training philosophy, this has helped both myself and many of the clients that present to our clinic.  So be sure to balance out the planes of movement in your training as well as ratio of work from back to front always.
