Active Straight Leg Raise – Movement Assessment

The Active Straight Leg Raise is one of the 7 fundamental movements assessed in the Functional Movement Screen to assess ones straight leg raise flexibility.  It is a great assessment test for the non injured client because it very quickly gives us a guide as to what their active hamstring flexibility is like and will help guide our exercise selection to either work towards improving this or perhaps to avoid exercises that require a decent amount of hamstring flexibility i.e. I may choose to select rack pulls versus deadlifting off the floor if they don’t have the required movement to maintain a stable and neutral spine.  From an FMS point of view I am wanting to work towards having my clients be symmetrical in their ASLR as well as get to a minimum score of 2, preferably a score of 3 (medial malleolus > mid thigh) without any compensations through the body.
